Research

During his Gastroenterology Fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Dr. Rodriguez focused on implementing QA/QI Project which integrated using QR code technology to improve guideline-directed care for admitted patients with decompensated cirrhosis. His interests also include GERD, where he piloted a retrospective cohort study of patients undergoing motility and reflux testing with wireless motility capsule. The study demonstrated that patients with a prolonged acidification time on wireless motility capsule were more likely to have GERD on ambulatory testing. The study was published and presented at the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society’s Annual Conference. During his time at Columbia, he assisted in the completion of a retrospective analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999-2010 in an effort to better understand risk factors for gastric cancer, specifically the association between gastric cancer and heavy alcohol use. Results of the analysis produced one of the largest studies to demonstrate an association between heavy alcohol use and gastric cancer in the United States. Primary responsibilities included literature search, manuscript composition and data analysis. The study was published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.

Fun Facts

  • Prior to starting medical school, Dr. Rodriguez worked as a volunteer alongside his father providing service medical missions in the Peruvian Amazon for several years providing medical care to the indigenous people of the jungle. Those experiences have shaped his career as a physician and continue to inspire him each and every day to provide care to the communities he serves. Now as a third-generation gastroenterologist, Dr. Rodriguez strives to carry on the legacy created by his  father and grandfather to provide the highest quality of care for the communities they care for.
  • In his spare time, Dr. Rodriguez enjoys spending time with his family, exploring new sights, and travel. He is a true beach bum and am happiest spending long days at the beach with his wife and children.
